WOMEN’S PERFORMANCE OUTERWEAR

We are leaders in performance outerwear. Our founder, and creative director, Michelle Rose, spent more than 15 consecutive seasons envisioning, directing, and managing the full design process of The North Face®’s largest and highest-selling category of women’s outerwear. Michelle was brought into the company in 2007 to pull together and redesign the company’s key rapidly-growing outerwear business into the company’s very first fully cohesive outerwear collection, taking a vast offering of outerwear pieces and creating product stories in style, materials, trims, and features within a tiered pricing structure. She revamped many TNF classics like the Denali, Nuptse, and Bionic Softshell while also creating new business selling millions of styles and generating billions of dollars in revenue. Michelle’s work pushed women’s outerwear to become the company’s top category in sales with her updated Osito Fleece Jacket rising to become the top selling style overall for the entire company. Her styles have been featured on television and film, print publications, trend forecasting sites, ad campaigns and editorials, on professional athletes and celebrities, and have won several industry awards. AGENCY ASPECT®
WOMEN’S PERFORMANCE BAGS + APPAREL

Partnering with Liana Delucca Johnson, Industrial Designer and fellow TNF alumni, Michelle co-founded Agency Aspect®, a new brand of bags and apparel for the modern active professional woman. Together they ran their first Kickstarter campaign in 2018 successfully raising $35K to fund the first production run of messenger and sling bags to launch the brand. Merging luxury leathers with performance materials and super lightweight anodized trims from the climbing world, Michelle and Liana were able to leverage their strong professional relationships to work with the top factories in the industry, producing beautiful, lasting pieces that are built specifically for women and their active and professional daily needs. WOMEN’S PERFORMANCE POSTURE WEAR

One of our favorite projects. Kinflyte®, founded by Bay Area tech entrepreneur by Vivian Lee, was built on the idea of creating beautiful posture wear that also incorporated shaping and support for the bust. Vivian hired Michelle and Struktur to co-create and define the brand image and launch foundational products, together developing a patented posture bra that can be comfortably worn all day whether working, relaxing, or being active. We brought in partners at Studio 317, run by Elizabeth Lemay, global innovation and development for Nike®, to help Vivian eventually grow the product collection serve the needs of women all shapes and sizes. TITLE NINE®
WOMEN’S PERFORMANCE SPORTSWEAR + outerwear

Michelle and Struktur were brought into Title Nine® in 2015 to move their Title Nine® label product forward into the future while protecting existing sales and an extremely loyal customer base. Through assembling and developing a strong design team, both in house and remote, we brought in our expertise to define, direct, and redesign all apparel product lines, from fabrics, trims, labels, style, and color. We produced some of the company’s top-selling pieces, still sold today. While we covered everything from pants and shorts to dresses, tanks, sweaters, jackets, seamless and swim, we paid particular attention to “the backside”, making active butts look great and focussing in on dresses that had pockets, ventilation, and allowed a woman’s natural athleticism to come out and play. We all get our start somewhere and this is where our founder got hers. Joining the company as intern in the early aughts and the beginning of the active fashion era, Michelle started out learning the ins and outs of skiwear design from the largest outdoor company in the world. Moving up quickly to become the company’s first International Designer, creating products for the US, Europe, Russia, Japan, Korea, China, and the Southern Hemisphere, Michelle developed her understanding of how to navigate the design business for complex global markets. Mentored by veteran active outdoor design leader, Robyn Hall (Millet) and working alongside colleagues from fellow local brands Nike® and Adidas®, Michelle has designed some of Columbia Sportswear®’s key iconic pieces. Combining her passion for fashion and being active, she launched the company’s first women’s performance casual (don’t call it the f-word) outerwear, joining new-comers Athleta®, Lucy®, and Lululemon® as early definers “athleisure” and setting the stage for a full culture shift in fashion. COTTON INCORPORATED
sci-fi SURF
WOMEN’S PERFORMANCE COTTON

Innovation projects like the Cotton Incorporated Sci Fi Surf collection are places for Struktur to play. Drawing from our desire for all clothing to perform at the highest levels, we worked with Cotton Inc to develop a cotton/nylon spacer knit to create a super-cozy neoprene-look collection of sportswear for both women and men. Merging our love of all things futuristic with the laid-back active lifestyle of surfing, we brought in Bemis® Adhesives, a regular player in synthetic active products, to incorporate their new adhesive technologies for natural fibers. Collaborating with US garment factory ROICOM, we built a collection to showcase four different companies’ state-of-the-art skills and products without the usual limitations of working with an established brand. All items were produced and showcased at trades shows and events around the globe.
CORDURA® + ARTISTIC milliners X.Venture
WOMEN’S PERFORMANCE DENIM

Struktur was excited to work with longtime collaborator CORDURA® and new partner Artistic Milliners to explore possibilities in performance denim while celebrating CORDURA®’s 50th anniversary. The CORDURA® + Artistic Milliners X.Venture Venture Collexion was built as a bridge spanning the company’s 50 years, from 1967 to 2017, merging the space-age excitement of the 60 with modern day futuristic denim. The collection, comprised of a men’s jacket, denim pants, and a women’s jumpsuit, incorporated 6 new technologies from CORDURA® and Artistic Milliners utilizing the Schoeller PCM®, ceraspace, and c-change technologies, CORDURA®’s Denim with Tencel® and Combat Wool technologies. All materials were chosen and body mapped where needed for ultimate performance. All pieces were produced and traveled the globe to promote the material collection collaboration.

SOFT ARMOUR
WOMEN’S modern outdoor

The CORDURA® Soft Armour Collection was the first material technology collaboration for both Struktur and CORDURA®. The idea was conceived by Cindy McNaull of Invista® and our founder Michelle Rose. The project was meant to hi-light “the softer side of CORDURA®” while also showcasing a more modern look for women’s outdoor apparel. The collaboration eventually led to the the very first CORDURA Meet The Maker video which has become a staple for the company’s YouTube channel. The collection incorporated Bemis natural fiber adhesive technology, was produced by Youngone in Vietnam, and traveled the globe to promote the technology, skill and involvement of all four companies involved in the collaboration.

20th anniversary of the sports bra
CLIENT: nike.com • ROLE: design consultant
Michelle’s path into the world of women’s performance design began 25 years ago with a special project for the fledgling NIke.com. The target was a page for the website celebrating the 20th anniversary of the women’s sports bra, the Jogbra. Nike wanted to head backwards and tell the story of the origination of the first sport bra made from two jock straps sewn together. At the time there was no archive, easily available imagery, or online resource to find out what the original sports bra idea looked like. So Nike hired our founder, Michelle, a student of apparel design at Bassist College in Portland, to “find two retro-looking jockstraps and figure out how they may have put them together for the first time” to make a bra. The final result was featured on the NIke.com website in 1998. Image: Smithsonian
